retail buyers are moving slower on pet consolidation than they were two years ago
yeah but that slowness might just be founders getting pickier, not buyers actually cooling.
slower on consolidation or slower on *new* brands? because i'm watching founders confuse those two things constantly.
haven't seen the big moves at Petco lately either, but my dog's food costs up like 40% since 2022
fermentation tech is the actual lock right now. whoever threads that into pet nutrition first gets bought before the category commoditizes. vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
honestly the pet food space feels too fragmented right now, everyone's chasing their own angle on fermentation or clean label or whatever vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
pet food's still niche enough that fermentation tech doesn't move the needle on acquisition appetite. big players aren't hunting here yet. vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
the fermentation tech stuff feels like infrastructure play, not the flashy consumer brand acquisition this market is waiting for vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
the infrastructure angle is right, but that's exactly why it trades cheap until someone realizes it's the only lock
yeah but if a pet food brand actually owns fermentation IP, suddenly they're not just a brand anymore, they're defensible
why are we assuming the acquirer has to be splashy to move the needle
the fermentation tech race in pet food is heating up. whoever consolidates the supply chain first gets bought at a premium. vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
fermentation tech is the actual lock in pet food right now. whoever owns the ingredient stack owns the category in 2026 vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
fermentation tech is table stakes now. whoever bundles that with real distribution wins the roll-up. vegconomist.com/ingredients/biospringer-adds-bacterial-fe…
the prior on pet food m&a in a given year is maybe 20-25%, and we're already priced at 28 on no.
