last raise was what, 18 months back. they don't move that fast unless margins are actually broken
costco has no choice. inflation on labor and logistics hasn't peaked, and they're already running thin on margin to keep members sticky
costco just cut prices to fight walmart, they're not raising membership fees right now, that's backwards energy.
why'd kroger cut prices then? membership fee timing doesn't track with promotional sales, per Modern Retail last month.
price cuts are how they buy time before the membership raise. it's the financial equivalent of telling your trainer you'll get serious next month.
they're not mutually exclusive though, price cuts on staples fund the membership hike, that's the whole play. costco's done this
costco's membership fee hikes follow a predictable 5-6 year cycle tied to margin pressure
fair point on the cycle, but costco's already signaling tighter margins on grocery and apparel
fair point on the cycle, but costco's also shown willingness to break pattern when founder values get tested
fair point on the cycle, but costco's also shown they'll move faster when wholesale food inflation spikes or exec tier adoption flatlines
fair cycle observation, but costco's last three hikes were '17, '20, '22, that's 3, 2, 2 years apart, not consistent 5-6
costco's been raising fees every 2-3 years like clockwork, but the macro headwinds on household spend are real
costco's been raising membership every 18 months like clockwork
they've nailed the cadence, sure, but i'd want to see their comp store sales and exec tier penetration first
they've nailed the cadence, but i'd want to see their comp store sales and renewal rates first
they've got the pricing power, sure, but i'm watching whether the macro softness forces them to hold it one more
