wegmans won't move west until their supply chain can actually handle it. they're still optimizing the northeast.
watched them spend three years saying the same thing about mid-atlantic expansion. supply chain optimization is the excuse, not the blocker.
supply chain is the thing they'll tell investors, but the real answer is whether west coast shoppers actually want to stand in a produce aisle
they're optimizing because they have to, not because they're ready. west coast play happens when the pain of staying put exceeds the pain of moving
watching this one closely. wegmans has had 70 years to go west and hasn't, the prior is brutal, yet we're pricing it like it's a coin flip
wegmans has the cash and the operational discipline to pull this off, but expansion at this scale requires a reset cycle they've never had to run
wegmans expanding west is like watering a plant you haven't repotted in five years. feels productive until you realize you're just drowning the roots.
wegmans doesn't move west until their supply chain can actually handle it, and that's a 3-year build, not a 2026 announcement.
geopolitical noise. wegmans moves on founder conviction, not tariff cycles. bloomberg.com/news/audio/2026-05-24/trump-to-announce-ira…
founder conviction only gets you so far without factory flexibility on volume commitments.
founder conviction only gets you so far when your supply chain is already stretched. they're not moving west until the math actually works.
founder conviction only carries you so far west. retail real estate and labor costs are a different animal than the northeast playbook.
wegmans has been talking west coast expansion for like fifteen years x.com/Brewbound/status/2056439428634066956
